Wired headsets (such as the one provided by your cell phone manufacturer) are composed of metal wires that extend from the audio port in your device to the speaker that is placed in your ear. These speakers and the metal wire both emit Electromagnetic Radiation. As with most technologies that emit EMR/EMF, the concern is minimal when the device emitting the radiation is kept at a safe distance, however with headphones, the wires have to remain close to our heads and the speakers have to be placed into our ears.
With an air tube headset, the metal wire connects to speakers only part way up the cable. The remaining portion of the cable, connecting the speaker to your ear, is replaced by hollow tubing. These hollow tubes of air (or “air tubes”) transmit the sound waves the rest of the way up to the earpieces — but because there’s no metal to act as a conductor, they transmit the sound only, not the radiation.
